Since it opened nearly two months ago on May 4, the Metropolitan Museum’s retrospective of the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen, Savage Beauty, has attracted over 350,000 visitors, surpassing the scores who shuffled into a hugely popular 2005 exhibition of Van Gogh drawings, but putting the blockbuster fashion exhibition not quite on pace to beat Jeff Koons’ 2008 rooftop sculpture show—at least not in terms of total attendance numbers.
And all that despite added hours on Mondays, when the rest of the Met is closed to the public, but desperate visitors can get into the McQueen show by purchasing a $50 ticket. Bloomberg reports that during regular museum hours, waiting in line to enter the wildly popular retrospective can take anywhere from half an hour to two hours, as groups of 400 visitors at a time are sent into the second floor’s Cantor Exhibition Hall (fun!). Roughly 6,500 people see the exhibition on most weekdays while the weekend closing time of 9pm allows 8,000 to see Savage Beauty on Saturdays and Sundays.
As of Sunday, 354,684 visitors had seen the McQueen exhibition. With about six weeks to go before its August 7 closing date, that puts it on pace to come fairly close to the whopping 657,801 who attended the Jeff Koons rooftop show. And that exhibition was open for six months, whereas Savage Beauty will be closing after four months and three days, meaning that on a visitor-per-week scale, it will have been the Met’s best-attended exhibition ever.
