Here’s Kenny Scharf Painting 100 Murals on Lower East Side Store Shutters

Though it didn’t go over so well this winter, artist Kenny Scharf has resumed his Gates Project with a goal about as ambitious as Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s similarly-titled Central Park installation: to paint 100 metal roll-down gates all over the Lower East Side (where his Houston Street mural is still looking pretty graffiti-free). Riding along Delancey last night around 8pm, I noticed Scharf still hard at work on one. Click through to get a sense of just how huge this mural is.

It’s on the metal shutters of the huge restaurant supply store at the northeast corner of Delancey and Bowery. The cartoon-faced figures stretch around onto Bowery, and at the other end come right up to the edge of neighboring Bowery Ballroom. It was looking pretty close to finished last night, complete with a many-eyed mutant mushroom cloud at one end (below) and a Jetsons-Flinstones mashup at the other. Check it out next time you’re passing through, or seeing a show at Bowery.
