I don’t care how twee and artisan they are getting: I love pickles. That’s why I was glad to discover a few new ones while sipping a Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast stout at the Grilled Cheese and Pickle Party at Jimmy’s No. 43 in the East Village. People came pouring in as the night went on, eager to taste one of the free grilled cheese sandwiches being cooked by Corey Cova of Earl’s Beer and Cheese. While there certainly was some good cheese, it was the pickles that really got me excited.
Evelyn Evers (below) of Sour Puss Pickles was on hand to talk about her line of organic, sustainable pickles, available at the New Amsterdam Market and online at Foodzie. Some of the company’s more interesting pickles include the curried cauliflower pickled with a touch of bourbon, star anise and allspice; pickled garlic scapes with coriander and chile de árbol; and ginger carrots.
Also on display were some spicy-ass pickles from Divine Brine, a Long Island-based operation that isn’t afraid to attack your sinuses where it hurts. My faves? The Wasabi Dills and the Devilish Dills. If you can’t make it out to Long Island, order a few bottles online. For something a little less fiery, you might want to pick up some of Millbrook Dairy’s bread and butter pickles at the Union Square Greenmarket.
