“Senator,” First Sign of Malkmus and Beck Collaboration Surfaces, And it is Great

Beck and Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus’ collaborative Mirror Traffic has been a while in the works. The upcoming album’s third track, “Senator,” has been around at least since 2009 (you can watch Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks performing the song in Portland above), but that’s to be expected when you have a slew of hyper-busy musical-legend types trying to coordinate recording schedules. And today, capitalizing on the current, scandalized political climate, Matador has leaked the recorded version. “What the senator wants is a blowjob,” Malkmus sings in the refrain. Hmm. Was that one planned? “It’s bound to happen sooner or later, let’s just wait to release this puppy until a politician inevitably does something sexually inappropriate.” Naw, that’s almost too brilliant of a marketing scheme.

Mirror Traffic drops August 23—we’re hoping that the rest of the album’s 14 songs are as deliciously catchy, meandering with that ’90s Pavement pulse sort-of-way, as this one. Listen here.
