  • “Foot massages don’t pay for themselves!”

Earlier this month, State Senator Marty Golden—who has steadfastly opposed gay marriage, the only state senator from Brooklyn to do so—said that marriage equality “is plain wrong! We’re not going to do this to our children!” As recently as this week, he said that Catholics “must continue to oppose [marriage equality's] challenge to our faith and this destruction of the sacrament of marriage.” Also this week, the catering hall Golden operated until elected to public office—and which is now operated by his wife and brother—was found to be enthusiastic to host a gay wedding.

From a Courier-Life article by Dan MacLeod, published on-line yesterday:

To find out if the staff at the Bay Ridge Manor—which Golden owned before selling it to a relative in 2003—shared the legislator’s beliefs, two of our male reporters stopped by the 76th Street catering hall on Wednesday, identifying themselves as same-sex partners looking for a place to celebrate their upcoming nuptials.

But instead of showing them the door, manager Jacqueline Fallon didn’t bat an eye and immediately spread out a few pamphlets on the desk, outlining the various catering packages that ranged from $60 a head for a “hot smorgasbord” buffet to $95 a head for a cocktail reception and a full dinner with choices of filet mignon and pan-seared yellow fin tuna steak.

She was courteous and open to hosting the event at the manor—which features a ballroom with crystal chandeliers—and never commented on the reporters’ apparent sexual orientation.

Golden doesn’t own the Bay Ridge Manor anymore; he sold it to his brother. But he’s the landlord, and his wife is an administrator there. As the Voice reported in 2008, Golden gets “three separate income streams…from the Manor, according to his filings: rent, his wife’s salary, and continuing payments from the 2004 sale.” Looks like Golden’s faith is important enough to determine civil law, but not the policy at his family’s business.

  • And here we have another Conservative phony. Marty Golden’s okay with withdrawing money from the GAYTM but now with backing gay marriage. I hope he’s challenged in the next election.
