This is a good weekend to be a glutton. Seriously, if you want to gain 20 lbs, this is the weekend to do it. People are going to be cooking animals whole, celebrity chefs are going to be making grilled sandwihes, and Roberta’s is giving away free pizza. Buy yourself some Pepto and get ready to get full.
Meatopia: It’s finally here. This Saturday, hordes of bloodthirsty carnivores will descend on Brooklyn Bridge Park to feast on animal flesh prepared by some of the country’s best chefs. Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo of one of my favorite restaurants in the entire country, Animal in Los Angeles, will be there, along with April Bloomfield of the Spotted Pig, Italian super-chef Michael White (Marea, Osteria Morini), Portland lardcore visionary Adam Sappington, Shane McBride of Balthazar and many more (check out the whole menu here). Pat LaFrieda is going to cook an entire steer whole in a Caja China box (pictured above). It’s going to be nuts, definitely worth the hefty $85 entrance fee. Look for me passed out next to the East River afterwards.
Bushwick Block Party: Roberta’s knows how to party. The restaurant is taking over an entire Bushwick block, serving up pizza, meatballs from Best Pizza, beer from Sixpoint and much more. Also on hand will be a bunch of bands like Team Robespierre and Wild Yaks, plus a dunk tank and mist tent. And it’s all free.
The Best Grilled Sandwich in Brooklyn Competition: Do you like hot, crusty, grilled sandwiches? Of course you do, because you are a living human being. For $20, you get sample the results of a cook-off between Evan Hanczor of Williamsburg’s Egg, Rick Hauchman of L Mag fave Van Horn Sandwich Shop and Ashley Fulk of Hill Country and “Top Chef” fame, all judged by Leonard Lopate! All proceeds go to benefit the Amazing Garden.
