A tweet from Spike Lee early yesterday morning has film blogs in a speculative frenzy over his new project, Red Hook Summer, which just went into production. Lee—who you have to assume from his tweets is always excited—will reprise his most famous role, as Do the Right Thing‘s Mookie, The Playlist reports. Lee tweeted:
“Wake Up. I been up since 430am. On the way to the set of THE NEW SPIKE LEE JOINT.Today is 1st Day of Shooting.Awwwwwwwwwwww Sheeeeeeeeeeeeet”
While information about the project is mostly gossip at this point, Blackfilm is reporting that the plot will follow an Atlanta native who is spending the summer in Red Hook.
Just what grown-up Mookie is doing in the film is still unclear. Is it a sequel? A prequel? A spin-off? Is Mookie opening up a chic organic brick-oven pizzeria on the old waterfront as a tribute to Sal? Or will this be some kind of terrible remake situation where he shows up looking not like we remembered without any plausible context and we all have to suffer the awkward contrivance of it? Everyone is pretty tight-lipped about it right now, but we’ll keep an ear to the cobblestone.
