First They Came for the Dogs in Bars

Since the city department of health instituted its letter grade system, health inspectors have been cracking down on dogs in bars, the Times‘s City Room blog reports, citing anecdotal evidence from bar owners and patrons who’ve observed an uptick in citations. Because liquor, beer and wine count as food under the relevant city guidelines, bars—even those that just sell plastic bags of Andy Capp Hot Fries—are no more supposed to allow dogs than any restaurant, technically, even in outdoor seating areas.

So many bars have been making patrons tie-up their animal companions outside of late, in deference to the laws about maintaining a perfectly sanitary environment for the consumption of hard alcohol. The Times also talks to the owners of neighborhood institutions like Floyd—they’ve been written up a couple times, and don’t much care for the new rules—and Fulton Grand, where the owners (and patrons) seem to continue to welcome the neighborhood dogs, who are, after all everything you want in a drinking buddy: social aides, true friends and good listeners in times of direst need, and likely to remember the way home if it comes to that.
