While It Was Raining: The Strokes and Jarvis Cocker Cover the Cars at Reading Festival

There was Irene, there was Beyoncé’s belly, there was Nicki Minaj in her Barbie cubism dress, but there was also this, a cover of The Cars’ unfailing “Just What I Needed” during The Strokes’ set at the 2011 Reading Festival this weekend, in which Julian Casablancas referred to special guest Jarvis Cocker as “The Jarv” and got a glimpse of what his future self might look like. Watch the could-be-father-son pair in the video above. That is a lot of ego onstage.

  • What ego? I swear I just saw tiny hearts floating in the air while Julian Casablancas was gazing at Jarvis Cocker’s beardy face. Julian is close to making a youtube video declaring his love, ala Jim Carrey, to Jarvis. Clearly, they didn’t rehearse, but it was a decent cover (like I knew the Car’s original). Nick Valensi (sp?) and Hammond Jr. were the real heroes on this one. They just made the two frontmen look like giggly schoolgirls comparing manicures.

P.s.: there are too many JC’s in my post. I hope that has nothing to do with that Jo Calderone bs on VMAs.

  • IT’S LIKE THE HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE VERSIONS OF JOSH CAME TOGETHER IN ONE FINELY DRESSED PERFORMANCE.
