For the past decade and a half Bushwick-raised rapper/actor Dante Terrell Smith has become widely known and praised by his stage name, Mos Def. For a brief moment in Spike Lee’s Bamboozled, he went by Big Blak Afrika. And now he’s announced that he’ll retire the name Mos Def at the end of 2011.
As he explains in the MTV2 interview below, shot backstage at a recent Rock the Bells show, as of January 1, 2012, Mos will go by Yasiin, which has been his legal name for at least a year and a half. But don’t worry, he won’t mind if you keep chanting “Mos Def” at his shows.
