The makeover of Sunset Park’s massive Industry City buildings into a sprawling art community continues apace, and last week an initiative to turn the alley between two buildings spanning Second and Third avenues between 35th and 36th streets resulted in Gia Wolff’s circular screen installation “Portaali” (pictured) hanging over the industrial waterfront.
The installation, created as part of Superfront‘s efforts to promote creative use of the large spaces between Industry City‘s huge buildings, hung last week until it was taken down early in anticipation of Irene. But Wolff sent ArchDaily images of the ephemeral Tyvek, steel and rope artwork, which was attached to adjacent fire escapes in a bicycle wheel spoke pattern. She tells ArchDaily:
It is situated at the edge of a three-sided courtyard and is a physical threshold between the buildings as well as a metaphorical threshold, a portal, between the real and the imaginary
“Portaali” marked the conclusion of Superfront’s summer of exhibitions at Industry City.
