A homeless man hanged himself with a rope in Greenpoint’s leafy McGolrick park on Sept. 24 at 8:30 p.m. The Brooklyn Paper reports this is the fifth death inside a Greenpoint park in the last 15 months, including another homeless man who hanged himself in Barge Park in March. Many if not all of the park deaths—including a hypothermia case in McCarren Park—have involved the homeless. “We can’t go another winter where we have guys dying of hypothermia in the park,” Councilman Steve Levin told the Paper. “We can’t turn a blind eye to it and the community wants to do something.”
Many in the community, including Levin, recently opposed plans for a homeless shelter in the neighborhood, on McGuinness Boulevard. But critics of the shelter say one of its major problems is that it wouldn’t service local homeless residents; homeless people from Manhattan would be bused in.
