This past Friday, one day before they’d take the stage at Music Hall of Williamsburg, indie rock legends Sebadoh set up shop at the much smaller and no less legendary Maxwell’s in Hoboken. Led most notably by Lou Barlow but also featuring stellar, underrated contributions from Jason Lowenstein, they continue to epitomize a fast-dying breed—a band that, despite having gotten much attention for their earlier lo-fi stuff, cares deeply about how things sound and is willing to sacrifice neither backbone nor emotional depth. Their two-hour set spanned much of their career, with a focus on the recently reissued Bakesale. NYC Taper has the whole show available for download, and it sounds amazing. Photos courtesy Nadia Chaudhury below, including openers Mazes and Risk/Reward, a Queens band you should also listen to, assuming you’re the kind of person to whom a Steve Albini co-sign, via t-shirt at this year’s ATP, means something. (I literally assume every person is that kind of person.)
