Jonathan Toubin, known around town for his famously fun Soul Clap and Dance-Off parties as DJ New York Night Train, was involved in a freak auto accident while staying at the Jupiter Hotel in Portland, Oregon yesterday morning. OregonLive.com reports cab driver Terry Uding was on her way to the hotel to pick up a passenger but was waved off once arriving, causing the car to accelerate and plow through the ground-floor room that Toubin was staying at while in town for a show scheduled later that night. He was asleep in bed at the time and “literally stuck under the front of the car,” police officer Stuart Palmiter told OregonLive.com.
Palmiter and three maintenance men were able to lift the cab’s rear tires out of the wall, enabling the car to be inched in reverse off of Toubin, who was unclothed, semi-conscious and covered in blood, but able to move his hands and legs, police report. Uding, who was found to have low blood sugar at the scene, likely suffered a diabetic emergency. She was brought to a Portland-area hospital last night, treated and released, while, as of yesterday, Toubin was in critical condition.
Here at home, benefit shows for the beloved DJ and all-around swell guy are planned for tonight at Home Sweet Home and Motor City with a slew of DJs and raffle prizes contributed by folks from the local music community. Check out the events’ Facebook page for more info; there’s also mention of a Paypal account that has been set up at firstname.lastname@example.org for those who’d like to donate towards medical bills and other immediate expenses but are unable to attend tonight.
