Back when its plan to take over the Tobacco Warehouse across the street fell through, we assumed that spelled doom for top-shelf experimental performance venue St. Ann’s Warehouse‘s prospects of staying in DUMBO, but happily we were wrong, and yesterday received news that after its current season ends in May to make way for a condo development that will require the razing of its 11-year home at 38 Water Street, St. Ann’s will move six blocks east.
Yesterday’s announcement identifies the future home of St. Ann’s as 29 Jay Street, a large brick building at the corner of Plymouth Street with a huge open plan indoor space and ceilings taller than those at the theater’s current home. The space’s specs look like so:
29 Jay is one of the largest remaining available spaces in DUMBO. It is ideal for St. Ann’s eclectic programming, which requires open, flexible, column-free space that can be artistically reconfigured. At 19,000 square feet, with 33’-high ceilings, the new building is larger than the current warehouse and similarly versatile.
The move involves leaving a property owned by neighborhood real estate magnates and local arts patrons David and Jed Walentas to take a three-year lease Forman Realty Management, LLC. Commenting on the move in the announcement Susan Feldman, artistic director at St. Ann’s, says:
We are deeply grateful to Two Trees and the Walentas family for a wonderful life at 38 Water and look forward to working with our new landlords, Forman Realty Management. If you love our current space, you will love the new one. We can’t wait to see you there next season.
The addition of St. Ann’s to the eastern edge of the neighborhood, where much of its future growth is slated to happen, will bring more than 50,000 visitors to the less postcard-y side of DUMBO.
