Julia Holter, our new favorite Los Angeles pop experimentalist, just released the video for “In The Same Room” this morning. It reminded us how woozily sweet that song is and how fond we are of Ekstasis, the upcoming album that it calls home. (Which, on it’s March 8th release from RVNG Intl., will zoom to the top of my personal 2012-in-progress favorites list. Which is secret.) The record sways in a refreshing crosswind of not-quite-twee sweetness and peculiar instrumentation. This single, which we’ve previous admired, is especially nice. It’s melodically direct and softly memorable, but still holds some quiet mystery. It reminds me just a little bit of a swell but forgotten early 00s song like Múm’s “Green Grass of Tunnel.” That reference is almost too applicable to your life and you are now totally sold, I’m sure. The video’s aesthetic, focusing on hazy scenes of nature, definitely slots into the Brooklyn lo-fi video zone that Conklin mentioned while discussing Lee Ranaldo’s latest. The specific use of black and white on Holter in contrast to the gauzy color of the rest is a thoughtful take at least. Mostly we just like listening to it. So soothing.

Fellow smitten New Yorkers patiently waiting for her NYC return will rejoice at new reports (via The Fader) of a March 6th show at Le Poisson Rouge. There she’ll be joined by cellist Christopher Votek and percussionist Corey Folgel (with support from pianist Sarah Cahill), providing an instrumental set up plausibly able to capture her kaleidoscopic work. We’re gonna go to it, and it’s going to be a total happening, probably. Tickets available here.
