Burglars are targeting bars on the northside, DNAinfo reports. A dozen robberies were reported just in February, an increase over the year before in a spree that officials say started in December. Bellwether Brooklyn has been hit, as well as the Gibson and Two Door Tavern and others—sometimes more than once. Some arrests have been made, and owners are taking precautions: Turkey’s Nest is double-locking its doors; the Gibson lays booby-traps; Two Door Tavern sets an alarm and keeps the register open, so potential robbers know there’s no money inside.
The DNAinfo story has a terrific lede, an image that encapsulates gentrified Williamsburg beautifully: a couple in evening attire chasing a burglar down Union Avenue. “My wife and I run together… and this guy was getting winded. He’s chubby,” the pursuer told DNAinfo. Read it here.
