Another step in our society’s long march toward integrating drinking into all aspects of life: one forward-thinking bar in Minnesota is now home to a pregnancy test vending machine. It even takes credit cards!

Interestingly, though, the machines aren’t targeted toward all you promiscuous drunks out there, but are actually meant to help prevent instances of fetal alcohol syndrome.

“It’s an epidemic,” said Jody Allen Crowe, founder of the non-profit Healthy Brains for Children. “The amount of prenatal exposure to alcohol is really not something people talk about because it’s such a guilt-ridden type of discussion.”

According to current numbers, 1 in 13 pregnant women admit to drinking at some point over the course of their pregnancy, and while experts disagree on whether small amounts are damaging, 1 in 5 of those women also admits to binge drinking, so, yeah.

It would seem that there are a lot of obvious upsides and downsides to this.

Pros include convenience, the machine’s $3 price tag, which is much cheaper than your average drugstore, and proximity to shots if you’re unhappy with your results (just kidding, pregnant readers, please don’t do that).

Cons include having strangers walk in on an incredibly personal moment, slowing down the bathroom line, and the real possibility of crying in public.

Provided that you live in the vicinity of Mankato, Minnesota, the choice is yours.
