Johnny Depp — smoker of rollies, Tim Burton contract player, star of literary abomination The Rum Diaries — is joining the cross-promotional ranks of Chelsea Handler and Rachel Ray with the launch of his very own publishing imprint. Already in the pipeline? Bob Dylan and Woodie Guthrie books.
And so it was foretold.
With HarperCollins as the parent company, Depp’s imprint will share a name with his production company, Infinitum Nihil meaning “Nothing is forever,” with the stated goal of seeking out “authentic, outspoken and visionary ideas and voices.”
Depp released the following statement:
“I pledge, on behalf of Infinitum Nihil, that we will do our best to deliver publications worthy of peoples’ time, of peoples’ concern, publications that might ordinarily never have breached the parapet. For this dream realized, we would like to salute HarperCollins for their faith in us and look forward to a long and fruitful relationship together.”
Now, while one could point to the depressing trend of celebrities propping up the publishing industry, or the fact that a book about Bob Dylan doesn’t necessarily qualify as something that “might never have breached the parapet,” the Woody Guthrie book actually does sound pretty cool. Reportedly, Guthrie wrote a novel, House of Earth, in 1947, the manuscript for which was only found recently. It is now scheduled for release by the imprint in January.
In the interim, we patiently await further news of a sub-imprint under which Bethany Cosentino can publish a series of planned books about Fleetwood Mac. It’s only a matter of time.
