Breezy Point, a beach community on the western tip of the Rockaways in Queens, might have been the part of New York hardest hit by Sandy. Not only did it flood—the ocean met the bay—but also fires broke out, spread by strong winds; firefighters were unable to battle them because of the flooding. At least eighty homes were destroyed. “To describe it as looking like pictures we’ve seen of the end of WWII is not overstating it,” the mayor said yesterday of the aftermath. Our friend Carolyn Larsen went down Breezy yesterday and took these photographs. “Most of them were taken where I live, in ‘The Wedge’ area,” she told us. “We had to walk quite a bit to get to our house. I brought my good camera.”
