The online art exhibitor Paddle 8 just put out a call for submissions for its first-ever GIF festival during Art Basel Miami week! It’s a *highly momentous* occasion:
To show these previously unseen gems from the far reaches of the internet alongside the works of some of the world’s most revered cultural ambassadors is truly a great moment.
GIFs will be shown online and at a “major exhibition event” in the Wynwood District of the Miami fair. Plus, submissions will be judged by these people—
Inez & Vinoodh
—who will announce their twenty-five picks November 26th. Submission guidelines: GIFs must be your own, no porn, and Paddle 8 reserves the right to distribute and “create derivative[s]” of your piece “in association with the festival.” And according to Paddle 8’s term of agreement, they’ll own your gif:
1. Proprietary Rights in Site. As between you and Paddle8, Paddle8 owns, solely and exclusively, all rights, title and interest in and to the Site, all the content (including, for example, audio, images, photographs, illustrations, text, graphics, logos, button icons, other visuals, video, copy, etc.), software, code, data and materials thereon, the look and feel, design and organization of the Site, and the compilation of the content, code, data and materials on the Site, including but not limited to any copyrights, trademark rights, patent rights, database rights, trade secrets, moral rights (including the rights of authorship and attribution and subsequent modification), sui generis rights and other intellectual property and proprietary rights (whether registered or unregistered in any jurisdiction) therein. Your use of the Site does not grant to you ownership of any content, software, code, data, or materials you may access on the Site.
So gather your GIFs and send them over to the Moving the Still Tumblr! May your GIF be acknowledged to the fullest extent of its unheralded glory.
And so far, here’s a taste of what you’re up against. So far, a lot of glitches and a lot of 8-bit:
