Fuck fuck fuck. There’s no sadder celebrity death than that of a great artist still in his or her prime. Only a handful of cinematographers ever achieve a level of notability and name-recognition comparable to directors, and Harris Savides was certainly one of them. He was one of the top men in his business, crafting gorgeous images—the headline of his Times obituary calls him a “Visual Poet”—for Gus Van Sant, David Fincher, Noah Baumbach and others, and he died earlier this week from brain cancer.
