There’s some chatter on Facebook and Twitter warning Williamsburgers of alleged scam artists fronting as Con Ed employees in the aftermath of Sandy, knocking on doors around the neighborhood, and robbing people at gunpoint. While no such stories have been confirmed by any substantial news source as of now, it seems smart to err on the side of caution in these situations.
In response, Con Ed tweeted early this morning: “All Con Edison employees have legit IDs; worried about imposters: call 1-800-75CONED or 911.”
In short, LOOK FOR AN I.D. BEFORE LETTING ANYONE INTO YOUR HOME. Shout really loudly through the door and ask for them to hold up their I.D., feel like an idiot, then take a look through your peephole, and feel safe. Please.
