As you may have heard, today is the first day of the fifth annual Northside Festival, an eight-day celebration of the music, film, and startup communities that make Brooklyn such an exciting and fulfilling place to live. We will go ahead and assume you’ve already bought your badge and drawn up an extensive and detailed schedule of Northside Music shows you’d like to attend, but in the event you’re having a hard time narrowing it down, please allow us to be of some assistance.
One might assume the first night of the festival would be somewhat light on must-see shows, but we assure you this is not the case at all. For instance, you’ve got genre-saving Danish punks Iceage at Music Hall, performing with fellow punk-rocking Danes Lower, the ever-reliable local noise-rock outfit A Place to Bury Strangers, and Brooklyn upstarts Benino Qwerty, who channel Chicago-style 90s post-rock in a most impressive way. You could also hit the Infinite Best showcase at 285 Kent, featuring longtime L Mag favorites Twin Sister and Ava Luna, plus everyone’s favorite ethnomusicologist/electro-folk singer Julian Lynch. Click here to buy a ticket, or click here to buy a badge.
Pitchfork’s got a big night planned at Saint Vitus, with a headlining set by Kim Gordon’s new project, Body/Head, and support from synth-pop deconstructionists Majical Cloudz, noise-rock duo Foreplay and Kathleen Hanna’s new project The Julie Ruin (just added!). Other options include the harmony-crazy, Seattle-based folk-pop band Ivan & Aloysha at Europa, recently resurgent post-punk legends Swans with Chelsea Wolfe at Warsaw, and Mac Demarco, White Fence and Walter TV at the Panache Booking showcase at Brooklyn Bowl. You could hang out there latenight, too, for a DJ set from ?uestlove, or you could head over to Union Pool to catch the inimitable JD Samson‘s PAT Party, featuring DJ sets by Sveta, Will Automagic, Amber Valentine and Samson herself.
