With just 64 pages of a biweekly culture guide to reveal the Best of Brooklyn in 2013, there’s bound to be some overflow. Taking Vampire Weekend into consideration alone, there’s bound to be some overflow. L Mag cultural pundits weighed in, overnight debates were endured, and eventually a consensus was made to honor the band with “Best Album Announcement” and, also, not that this is a big deal, but “Best Album Released by a Brooklyn Band So Far This Year.” This was to the detriment of taking top spots in other, more distinguished categories, however. Those include:
1.) Best Cover of a Summer Mega Hit
2.) Best Fake Fight With Electro-Funk Duo Chromeo in a Music Video (respects go to drummer Chris Tomson)
3.) Best Dating Advice for Teenage Girls
Awards aside, and nevermind melody, compositional dexterity and clever marketing tactics for a moment. At the end of the day, we’d be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the band’s real significance in the cultural landscape. It’s common knowledge that frontman Ezra Koenig has cracked the code to tweeting, but did you guys know that he excels at the art of the selfie? Of course you did, you presumably live in Brooklyn and are reading the online companion to The L Magazine. But just to confirm, a few samplings culled from his Instagram account are below. (His authored captions are included, as their sly self-awareness is all very much part of the artistry.) We are all apprentices to his master craftsman.
Congrats, Ezra! Who said an Ivy League degree wouldn’t get you anywhere?
