Now that it’s been confirmed that 285 Kent is, in fact, closing down for good (and presumably hasn’t been saved by Jay-Z and Beyonce), we’re getting something in the way of an explanation, and a game plan for the venue’s end of days.

Longtime booker Ric Leichtung told the Fader, “We were getting so much unwanted attention from authorities that we decided to move out and move on. Ad Hoc spoke to Todd and basically came to the decision that we should probably go out with our heads up rather than be shut down or evicted [...] I will miss this place so much. I can’t even tell you. 285 Kent is an endeavor that wouldn’t mean anything without its community and the people that work there. I’m sure that something good will come out of this. It’s the nature of this kind of thing.”

Of the nearby Two Trees development and condo boom, Leichtung said, “It’s definitely a sign of the times in Williamsburg: time’s up for us.” For now, Ad Hoc and Todd P are collaborating with Pitchfork for four final shows, with lineups as follows:

January 11:
02:00 Maxmillion Dunbar
01:00 Laurel Halo
12:00 Special Guest
11:00 Autre Ne Veut
10:00 Ital
09:00 Bookworms

January 17:
02:00 DUST
01:00 Special Guest
12:00 Dan Deacon
11:00 DJ Dog Dick
10:00 Ava Luna

08:30 Uumans

January 18:

January 19: Tickets
12:00 Fucked Up
11:00 DIIV
10:00 White Lung

Sad, even if their “on to the next one” approach is admirable (or at the very least realistic). Get in there while you can.
