Bay of Angels (1963)
Directed by Jacques Demy
A young banker, warned by his father never to gamble, jets off to the casinos of southern France and falls for a gorgeous, middle-aged gambling addict. Demy’s second feature avoids the pitfalls of flashier gambling pictures, opting for somber realism and an astute comparison between love and gambling. His camera lingers on the pair long after their luck runs out, until the wins and losses are met with the same vacant stare. Jeanne Moreau delivers one of her finest performances as Jackie, the seductive Parisian who would sell her soul for another spin at the roulette table. A.J.
