We all have traits passed down from our parents — blue eyes, a biting wit, or in the case of the United States and the United Kingdom — a predisposition for meat, dairy, fat, and meat and dairy fried in fat. So what better way to follow up on our list of top All-American dishes than with an homage to our mother (and in the case of the Olympics) host country? Go on and take an artery-clogging bite out of Britain (in Brooklyn) at these veddy English eateries!

ChipShop

The menu at Brooklyn’s most aggressively Euro cafe reads like a bullet list of British faves — mammoth filets of flaky white fish and stout, greasy chips swaddled in newspaper? Check. Heinz beans on toast, mushy peas, and the sickly sweet carbonated blackcurrant juice known as fizzy ribena? Check. And you can get some treacle pudding or a deep fried Mars bar for dessert, but you know you’d rather have the spotted dick with custard — you dirty-minded American, you.

The Black Horse Pub

This Park Slope drinkery takes a few decidedly non-UK turns (Nonna’s meatballs, anyone?), but there’s still plenty of enjoyably authentic pub grub to be found. Just sidestep the chicken empanadas in favor of the bangers and mash — Myers Cumberland sausages and rosemary potatoes doused in plenty of Guinness-thickened gravy.

Bed Stuy does British? You bet your mummy! The full English breakfast is all you’ll need to alleviate the worst pint-induced hangover — a gut busting fry-up of eggs, sausage, Irish bacon, beans, black pudding, fried tomatoes, mushrooms, chips and toast.

Longbow Pub and Pantry

You don’t go to NY’s only Welsh pub for salads — especially when they’re so adept at piling white bread with all matter of fat-tastic goodies. Don’t bother calorie counting the delightfully carb-loading Chip Butty (fries on buttered toast — why didn’t we think of that first?) or the sinfully sloppy Welsh Rarebit — swimming in rivers of bacon, beer, and melted cheddar cheese.

Gordon Bennett Bar

If anyone knows how to cook their food into complete and utter submission, it’s the Brits — that’s why it’s a go-to-cuisine for roasts, pasties, chowders, hot pots, and mashes. This spacious Williamsburg pub takes a page from that long-simmered cookery book — churning out cool-weather potages like beef and beer stew and cottage or salmon pie.

Ceol

We like our corned beef and cabbage as well as the next Irishman, but don’t always want a big plate of it — especially during the oppressive heat of summer. That’s why the self-contained Irish Cigars at this Celtic Cobble Hill bar are their own brand of genius…savory little rolls of steamed meat and veg with a tangy mustard dipping sauce.

Bombay Masala

Forget about fish and chips — anyone who knows anything about true British cuisine knows that the real national dish is Chicken Tikka Masala. We’re partial to the tandoor-baked chunks of yogurt-marinated poultry at this Prospect Heights curry house — served with basmati and poori or freshly baked naan.

The Monro Pub

When did Park Slope become the place to get your Brit-style drink on? Anglophiles will find a lot to love at this “Liverpool in Brooklyn” bar, including pub quizzes, pie and pint happy hours, Walkers prawn and Branston pickle chips, and all the Guinness, Boddingtons, Newcastle, Strongbow, or Old Speckled Hen you can drink.

Bosie Tea Parlor

Every once in a while we have to bite the bullet and acknowledge that Manhattan exists, and unfortunately, there’s nowhere in our borough to indulge in a true afternoon tea service (Sweet Melissa’s only does theirs for large parties). So until a Brooklyn restaurateur gets wise, we’ll just have to hop the train and get our fix of cucumber sandwiches, scones and clotted cream, and piping hot pots of Lady Grey tea at this elegant West Village cafe.

That random bodega down the street from my mom’s house in Bay Ridge (otherwise known as Beyer Farm)

Oddly enough, this Arab-owned deli carries a generous assortment of my favorite Brit biscuits (McVitie’s), candies (Smarties), condiments (Hp Sauce) and chocolates (Lion, Flake, Crunchie, Bounty, and mint-flavoured Aero). Who knew?
