Laena McCarthy, the founder and CEO of Anarchy in a Jar, makes jams and jellies in Brooklyn, all from the finest ingredients and containing as little extraneous sugar as possible. She sells her wares at a variety of stores, including Brooklyn Larder and the Bedford Cheese Shop, as well as from a stand at Smorgasburg every Saturday and Sunday. But is it truly revolutionary to subvert the establishment when the establishment is something as innocuous as Smuckers? You bet it is. Anarchy in a Jar represents everything positive about the locavore, DIY food movement. McCarthy grew up making jams with her family and finally decided to turn her passion into a career. And with flavor combinations like Grapefruit and Smoked Salt Marmalade and Spiced Beer Jelly, I can honestly say that I’m on board.
