What's the best performance you've seen recently in New York?
I've been traveling non-stop since May so I haven't seen much in NYC recently. The season is just starting again and I am exited about many things. My recent out-of-town favorite would be Jonathan Burrow's Cheap Lecture, which I saw in Berlin as part of the Tanz im August festival.
What were you up to this summer?
I traveled quite a bit. I was Brazil in May for a 10-day tour. Next was a great two weeks spent in Nova Scotia with another project, and then I was lucky enough to enjoy the month of August in Berlin where Peter joined me for a week on his way to Hamburg, for work. It was already fall weather in Berlin and Berliners were complaining, but I appreciated it after a sticky July in New York.
The best thing about the arrival of Fall?
My good friend Lisa was telling me how Rosh Hashanah is the only Jewish holiday she really celebrates because she genuinely feels that fall is the beginning of a new year. It makes great sense to me. It is harvest time, Babylonian pagan holiday, starting of the new theater season everywhere etc.
So from now on, Fall is when I have my new year celebrations as well. And I was born in September so it is literal, but I never thought about it this way until my chat with Lisa.
Asli and Peter
Where else in Brooklyn have you lived?
This is our first Brooklyn location. I lived in Queens and Peter was in the East Village before we moved to Williamsburg in 2010
If you could take one Brooklyn neighborhood, lift it out of New York and plant it in some other city, which hood would you take and where would you put it?
I would take North Williamsburg and plant it somewhere in Canada to escape the Tea Party.
Could you tell me a little about some of your favorite pieces of art or design in your apartment?
Well, I think my creepy clown cookie jar is one of my favorite possession but Peter does not share my passion for it. Pictures of my parents and family are also very important for me. I talk to them through these photos often. Then there are the prints from our dear friend Barbara Barlett—she is a great artist and she gave this compilation of prints to us as a wedding gift; it's a work-in-progress, as we're still figuring out how to display them. Oh, I shouldn't skip Harvey, my beloved rubber plant which has been with me since '97. He's my oldest friend in NYC.
How and when did you two meet?
I met Peter through a show he designed for Bill. T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. I was a performer in it and he designed the video projection for it. For one of the scenes in the show he filmed me drinking wine and talking about school-yard games. We did the filming at 9am in his apartment. I think I had too much wine too fast for breakfast that day...
