In 2010, Brett Fletcher Lauer and Gretchen Scott started the online art project Ships that Pass, enlisting notables like Lena Dunham, Emma Straub, and Paul Legault to write fake missed connections, which they then posted to Craigslist, sometimes eliciting real responses. We asked them to craft a few fictional Brooklyn moments.

Everyone else was on a computer looking at Facebook or Tumblr. I was wearing a plaid shirt thinking about the new Jay Z album. I can’t tell if I think it’s cool or not that he quoted those Nirvana lyrics. I need someone to talk to about this. Your eyes were blue or green, though I couldn’t tell behind your sunglasses. If I found you on Tumblr, I’d write you anon messages—things like, What’s your favorite book? Movie? Do you love that Aerosmith song “Sweet Emotion”? And then I’d “like” them hoping you would figure out it was me.

There you were, as if conjured from my imagination. I wanted to believe in the occult, in the invisible hand of some mystical being somewhere guiding the moment. It was as if we were in a romantic comedy and I wanted to tell you the ending; that the woman and the man finally find each other after years of time-travel, wandering, and costume changes. Hell, maybe we’re time-traveling right now.

I liked that you weren’t taking photos of everything. I was still thinking about the mummies, how all the organs were removed except the heart. I don’t want to be buried alone. would it be weird to get your cat mummified? Or is that taxidermy? Why can’t two strangers have a conversation about things like this in a quiet, empty gallery?

I regret being shy. I think we all do. And those who don’t, I’ve never sincerely trusted. You asked the bookstore clerk for The More You Ignore Me. I’m guessing it’s a biography of Morrissey. Didn’t he claim he was asexual? I’ve never felt that way. I have to know your name. I love to kiss, but I’d also be fine with just a friendship. We could start a two-person book club.

I thought you might have been at the garden to see the corpse flower, because you seemed sullen. Have you heard about this? It’s a flower that only blooms every few years. It’s taller than a man, cone-shaped, and it smells like rotting meat. I wanted to hold your hand and look at the koi fish.

You told me that you were married, but you weren’t wearing your wedding band. That was the end of the conversation, but it occurred to me later that maybe it was a technicality and I shouldn’t have been so judgmental. You could be separated, or in a loveless marriage to a greencard bride. Or maybe YOU are the greencard bride? I didn’t detect an accent.
