From 2003 to 2010, Downtown added 12,000 private-sector jobs, an increase of almost 20 percent. In January, 21 buildings in Downtown were landmarked, making it the city's first "skyscraper historic district." (Real estate types opposed the designation, for fear it would limit development.)
The colleges include LIU, the Polytechnic Institute of NYU, St. Francis College, Brooklyn Law School, the New York City College of Technology and SUNY Empire State College.
