The rates of some sexually transmitted diseases are soaring in New York City, according to a new report from the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, CBS
reports—one-third of all zip codes are in the top 20 percent for rates of HIV/AIDS, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and hepatitis B, and two non-sexually-transmitted diseases, hepatitis C and tuberculosis. ("The diseases often occur among the same populations," CBS reports.) So we went poking around the DoH's website for reports to find out what areas in Brooklyn have the most STDs. Here's what we found. [

Crown HeightsWhen the DoH says "Crown Heights" they mean Prospect Heights, Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy. Almost 25 percent of all chlamydia cases in Brooklyn men in 2011 were in these neighborhoods, and 23 percent for women. Meanwhile, the neighborhoods account for 31 percent of all gonorrhea cases in women and 29 percent in men. [

East FlatbushThis includes Flatbush, East Flatbush, Prospect Lefferts Gardens and Midwood, which account for roughly 15 percent of the gonorrhea cases and 17-19 percent of chlamydia. [

WilliamsburgMeaning, actually, East Williamsburg and Bushwick. (Bedford Williamsburg, as far as the DoH is concerned, is Greenpoint.) These neighborhoods are neck and neck with East New York (which also includes Brownsville); Williamsburg had a higher instance of gonorrhea and chlamydia infections among men than East New York, which had higher rates among women. CanarsieOr basically all of southeastern Brooklyn, including Marine Park, Mill Basin and Bergen Beach. At this point, rates have dropped to almost a third of their Crown Heights highs; only 8 percent of chlamydia infections among men are in these neighborhoods. [

Downtown HeightsNext up, this strangely named area, which encompasses Park Slope, Red Hook, South Brooklyn, Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO. There were slightly more gonorrhea cases among men here than in Canarsie, but otherwise cases of infection are down several percent. [

Bay RidgeFor all the haters, the Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst-Bath Beach area had the lowest rates of gonorrhea and chlamydia in Brooklyn—among the lowest rates in the city, in fact, though CBS
reports that rates of Hepatitis B and tuberculosis are high in the area because of its large foreign-born population, among whom rates for such diseases tend to be higher. [
