Breakups are one of those things everybody's been through, so everybody's sympathetic—to a point. You'll get a pat on the shoulder, a drink at the bar, but no one will help you close down the place while you try to work out why everyone you've ever loved has left you, nor lie awake with you talking it through after the bartender has sent you home. Luckily, breakups have inspired songwriters at least since "Greensleeves"—which almost made this list, except I thought you guys would've laughed at me—so there's the sympathy of shared experience by generations past and present to keep you company through those long, lonely hours.
