So, just some quick, shitty news about the G that may or may not cripple your plans for this summer (and the next): starting in July, the "Greenpoint Tube" portion of the train will be closed for repairs over the course of 12 separate weekends, and then next summer? Well, it'll be closed completely, for 5 weeks straight.
The tube, which runs under Newtown Creek to connect Brooklyn and Queens, has apparently undergone a good deal of corrosion (much of it due to Sandy), with salt water-related damage on the power cables, and damage on the outside of rails, and problems with "ventilation, lighting and communication systems" that have essentially been in ruins since the storm. What this means specifically, is that the stops at Greenpoint Ave, 21st Street, and Court Square will be replaced with shuttle buses over the weekends of July 6th, 13th, and 20th, August 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th, September 7th and 28th, October 5th, and December 7th and 14th. Yeesh. This will all be followed by a period of relative calm, then the aforementioned 5 week closure.
I guess all we can do is try to enjoy Greenpoint as much as we can while it's still even sort of accessible? Or, if you actually live there, time to start getting really into your bike.
