Next Tuesday night marks the beginning of Summerscreen, the L's free weekly outdoor film series at McCarren Park Pool, which you should come to, often, on Tuesday nights throughout July and August. You should especially come next week, for the opening night screening of Wet Hot American Summer ("I went to camp so long ago that fucking Jesus Christ was my counselor!"), and for what precedes it, namely, the Williamsburg Block Party, featuring live music from local bands and food from upwards of a dozen Brooklyn eateries.
And next Friday at the Slipper Room, of course, is the glorious, boozy finale of Literary Upstart: The Search for Pocket Fiction, at which our three semifinal winners compete for a large novelty check and publication in the L's Summer Fiction Issue, in a literary Thuderdome-style death match, only with more drunken L Mag employees looking on and yelling out to the emcee to "take off [his] shirt!"
You should come, we'll see you there.
