This is quite possibly my favorite song*, but I think I'd like it more if Nina didn't reverse the gender of the original. I hate it when singers singing cover version do that, switch gender pronouns around to ensure the heteronormalcy of their version.
I can understand it when the song is a traditional song, and not definitively associated with any one act (and in fact sort of designed to be for all people), and it's maybe natural for people who are primarily covers singers, like Nina, to consistently realign the "I" of lyrics to suit themselves. But when the song that you're singing is known as somebody else's song, it's kind of a squeamish sidestep, don't you think? I mean, when you're singing along to something sang by someone of the opposite gender (or orientation), do you change the pronouns?
This is yet another reason why Cyndi Lauper is our greatest singer.
* Actually, my favorite song is really this. But please don't tell anyone.
