So, the CMJ Music Marathon is here, along with most bands you like or will like soon, today through Saturday. This is a good time for you the music fan, and for us — me, Sharon, L Music Editor Mike Conklin and music contributor Lauren Beck — who get to go to shows and write about shows and spend our workdays listening to music on headphones for "research." The current issue of the L has our day-by-day recommendations, and tomorrow's new issue will feature complete listings for to carry around in your pocket, but here at the blog, in addition to many many recaps from all of us, I'll be flagging some addition shows for you.
So, "Day One Picks."
Actually, the magazine pretty much has this covered, as there's only really two especially notable shows on this the opening night, one of which is already sold out. (All the good mid-level bands that make even a happy hour basement show in a two-dozen-person room interesting will be coming into the city later in the week.) Those two shows are the BrooklynVegan showcase at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, headlined by bedheaded bedroom lap-pop Passion Pit and "Singing DJ" Jens Lekman, which sounds even more charming and Swedish than he usually is, which is very. Also very charming and very Swedish is the low-key pop diva Lykke Li, who plays at Bowery Ballroom, which has already sold out but seriously her newly released here Youth Novels is really terrific.
