"For me, shooting an action scene is no different from shooting a love scene. What really matters is what happens before the penetration and not after."
-Wong Kar Wai
The quote comes from a conversation in the current Interview between Wong and his longtime cinematographer, Christopher Doyle's Hangover. Wong and Doyle's Hangover made beautiful pictures together but seemed to have an artistic divorce some time during the interminable shoot of 2046; as Ashes of Time Redux, a restoration of their early collaboration, is released, they've been making public appearances recently, which makes me wonder if they might end up getting the band back together at some point.
Oh and Amy Taubin's essay for the new (and apparently gorgeous) Criterion edition of the only movie ever made, Chungking Express, is worth a read.

Did you know Days of Being Wild and Fallen Angels are on CUNY channel this coming weekend? yes.
I'm not going to buy Chungking Express yet again but, damn, I sort of want to.
I really like Amy Taubin's parallel between "Chungking Express" and "Masculin/Feminin." It almost makes me want to create a little quiz which tells the test-taker to match the WKW and Godard film by drawing lines.
I know what I'm doing the moment I have some spare time...
Oh, I am definitely buying Chungking Express again.
