The New Yorker Reader: "The Color of Shadows," by Colm Tóibín

Gray. The color of shadows is: gray.

Do you like sad, quiet stories about British people? You will probably like this one, then. It's so quiet that I don't really have much to say about it, on account of reading it on the train and in the park during lunch and online — the world is perhaps to noisy and distracting for a patient, interior story like this; read it at home, at night, with your phone turned off and the curtains closed.
