Announcing Summerscreen 2009

Posted by Mark Asch on Wed, May 20, 2009 at 10:47 AM

43bc/1242830799-summerscreen_blog-image.jpgSummerscreen, the L's outdoor film series, returns to McCarren Park for six consecutive Wednesday evenings this July and August, for free screenings on the ballfields (our previous location, the Pool, we recall with a twinge of nostalgia, is closed for renovations). You'll want to checking in with us as we bring you updates on food vendors, giveaways, and guests musical and otherwise — but, first, let's see what movies you'll be trying to smuggle Turkey's Nest margaritas-to-go into, shall we?

SummerScreen, 2009.

July 8: Reality Bites. You know it's been fifteen years since Reality Bites came out? It's the kind of thing that makes you want to have pseudo-profound conversations about time and shit, over coffee and cigarettes. Turn this up, you won't be sorry.

July 15: Evil Dead 2. Bruce Campbell's autobiography is entitled If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor. We just thought you'd want to know.

July 22: 24 Hour Party People. This movie was postmodern before it was fashionable, and it was right about Shaun Ryder: he is the greatest poet since Yeats.

July 29: Wild at Heart. Our decision to show this movie represents a symbol of our individuality, and our belief in personal freedom. The evening of July 29 will likely be hotter than Georgia asphalt, so dress accordingly.

August 5: Fame. I was not involved in the decision to show Fame, so I have less to say about this one.

August 12: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Will this be the time you get all the way through it without crying?

So, thoughts?

24HPP-sick! you know it's just going to get more people who don't already know the illness that is Joy Division to become "huge fans," pump "Love Will Tear Us Apart" on their speakers, and wear "Unknown Pleasures" T-shirts but I'm all for posers (with good taste)!

July 8: Reality Bites. Ok you know that scene when Winona comes back and he goes "what took you so long?" Cute, very cute...(wait is that a spoiler?? sorry...)

July 15: Evil Dead 2: more like Evil Meh 2...

July 22: 24 Hour Party People. One of my favorite movies of all time (surely top 10 of 00's). This and "Donnie Darko" released within months of each other...

July 29: Wild at Heart: 20 thousand people(that's how many people will show up) singing "Love Me Tender" as the credits roll. Maybe? Would be a scene to see...

August 5: Fame : poor Coco...

August 12: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: I haven't seen it yet.

I will be parked on the field July 8th, with a full pack of cigarettes and a bag of cheesedoodles.

And I will never be able watch Eternal Sunshine without shedding a tear...but I'm a cryer. I admit it.

Last year, at L's screening of "Wet Hot American Summer" at McCarren Pool (it will be sadly missed), I got to take a picture with Paul Rudd and he had his arm on my waist. I will never forget that.
