The big news out of Congress today is the House Energy and Commerce Committee's passage, not quite along party lines, of the excruciatingly compromised, but still extraordinary ambitious (an 83 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050!) climate bill. Lots of hurdles remain, of course: upcoming committee votes, a floor vote in the House, many millions of dollars worth of lobbying from countless industry interests... but still. This bill will probably pass the House of Representatives, probably this year!

Oh, wait, what's that, Times article on the bill?
In the Senate, leaders say they lack the votes to pass the bill as it is now written.

Oh. Well. That's that, then.
