Art Pride Month at the Galleries

June is Gay and Lesbian Pride Month, and though the big events (parades, dances, marches, rallies, etc.) won't be happening until later on, there are already a few Pride-themed exhibitions at galleries throughout the city. The biggest opens today at the Bryant Park branch of the New York Public Library and addresses the period between the Stonewall riots in 1969 and the first Pride march in 1970 via historical documents and photography. 1969: The Year of Gay Liberation continues through June 30.
At the LGBT Center in the West Village, meanwhile, then and now is an exhibition celebrating the anniversary of an exhibition that celebrated the anniversary of the Stonewall riots (too self-referential?). In 1989 the Center invited artists to create site-specific works on the walls of their West 13th Street space, and now they've done the same, making this both a 20th anniversary exhibition and a 40th anniversary exhibition.
Finally, though not Pride month-related, the Leslie-Lohman Gay Art Foundation's current exhibition is another terrific retrospective of an oft-overlooked gay artist, Marco Silombria (work pictured at right). Dionysus in Love chronicles the Italian artist's career-long engagement with the style and subject matter of gay culture, and continues through June 27.
