JD Salinger: Kind of a Huge Prick, Actually

Posted By on Wed, Jun 3, 2009 at 2:48 PM

salinger.jpgJD Salinger has just filed suit to stop publication of a supposed Catcher in the Rye sequel called 60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye. It's the work of an unknown first-time author going by the pseudonym "JD California", and to be published by a new house called "Windupbird Publishing".

This book, which apparently does exist despite its fishy-sounding circumstances, can't possibly be any good — I'm picturing a Scarlett for the slightly more pretentious. But, you know, still. For a person who wants no part of the world, JD Salinger is awfully particular about the place he and his work occupy in it. I am reminded of what an animated gangster once said to Bugs Bunny.

It is The L Magazine's firm hope that JD Salinger will actually have to appear in court to justify his (frankly rather dubious when you consider the ethics and implications) claim of copyright infringement. If it comes to that, you know, Professor Irwin Corey is still alive...
