Getting Their Tonys Worth

Posted by on Sun, Jun 7, 2009 at 1:46 PM

c07f/1244396156-tonymedallionweb.jpgBucking recession-times trends, Broadway is coming off one of its biggest seasons ever, with 43 new shows opening and nearly $1 billion in revenue. Accordingly, this year's Broadway back-patting spectacular, the Tony Awards (tonight at 8pm at Radio City Music Hall and on CBS) has a fairly spectacular lineup, with Neil Patrick Harris hosting and performances by Dolly Parton and the cast of 9 to 5: The Musical, Elton John and the boys from Billy Elliot and Liza Minnelli and her delirious self, among others. You can also watch a live simulcast from newly pedestrian Times Square.

Of course, you could also read The L's Liam Pierce's take on the "granny-pants snooze fest" and skip it all together. Besides, with Broadway seeing so much green this year, isn't Shrek, The Musical basically guaranteed a clean sweep?
