Google Maps of Robert Moses's Manhattan

Posted by Benjamin Sutton on Wed, Aug 5, 2009 at 4:07 PM

This is sort of old news, but it's still really cool: the artist and writer behind Vanshnookenraggen Blog created fascinating/terrifying Google Maps renderings of what Lower and Midtown Manhattan would look like if Robert Moses (the man behind the BQE and Cross-Bronx Expressway and, weirdly, McCarren Park Pool) had gotten his way. Namely: highways connecting the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridge offramps to the Holland Tunnel, and another connecting the Queens-Midtown Tunnel to Lincoln Tunnel. Here's what the Lower East Side, Soho, Greenwich Village and Tribeca could have looked like if the Lower Manhattan Expressway had torn through:

Head over to Vanshnookenraggen Blog for a larger version and a nightmare vision of Midtown.
