Ai Weiwei, a Chinese sculptor and installation artist who specializes in beautiful, monumental and mysterious objects and spaces, recently underwent surgery to repair cerebral hemorrhaging caused by an attack by Chinese police last month. According to
Artinfo, Weiwei was in Chengdu, in Sichuan province following the trial of another activist being investigated for criticizing the Chinese government's response to the
Sichuan earthquake in May 2008. Weiwei claims police came to his hotel, beat him and threatened to kill him.
Now in Munich, where he's opening an exhibition next month, Weiwei has had surgery (and posted pre- and post-op photos on Twitter) and is reportedly recovering just fine. His work is currently on view at Mary Boone Gallery (which represents Weiwei in North America) through October 24 in Chelsea.
