New Gagosian Bookstore Opening Friday

Gagosian Gallery
Art Daily has an inside look at the new bookstore at 988 Madison Avenue that Larry Gagosian (of the eponymous art gallery empire) will be soft opening Friday. Between the two blockbuster shows opening in his Chelsea galleries the night before (including one by Japanese Pop artist Takashi Murakami), and rumors that Gagosian will be opening its next outpost in Paris imminently, the gallery has been one of a select few maintaining a fervent pace of expansion during the economic downturn.

The new Upper East Side bookstore promises to cater to a slightly less exclusive audience, though, with all the gallery's publications, posters and related memorabilia on sale, along with smaller works by many of the marquee names represented by Gagosian: Tom Friedman, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Richard Prince, Ed Ruscha, Tom Sachs and Franz West. It's basically an Uptown version of X-Initiative's Artbook @ X shop on West 22nd.

UPDATE: ArtWeLove offers more views of the new Gagosian bookstore from a preview last night.
