Typically,
Madison Square Park's art program prioritizes massive
installations and
sculptures (like the current striped forms by
Mel Kendrick), but today the popular public park becomes a performance venue.
Bill Beirne, whose video and performance art has been featured at P.S.1 and SculptureCenter, will be playing The Vigilant Groundskeeper today through October 30 (Tue-Sat 11am-2pm, 3pm-6pm) in the public performance
Madison Square Trapezoids (rendered at right). The 68-year-old New York-based artist will turn the oft-overlooked labor of groundskeepers, horticulturists and maintenance crews into a kind of absurd routine, performing quixotic variations on typical park staff duties.
