Despite a scare earlier
this week, when actor Tony Roberts felt ill during a preview performance of
The Royal Family on Broadway and had to be taken to a hospital (his daughter later
explained that it was a minor seizure),
ArtsBeat reports that Roberts was back on stage last night for the opening performance of the backstage comedy.
Just in time for Ben Brantley's glowing review in the Times, though he's especially fond of the show for the performances by Roberts' co-stars Jan Maxwell and Rosemary Harris. Says Brantley: "when, in the play’s second act, this mother and daughter start to preach the family gospel to an apostate in their midst, something close to a miracle occurs." As for Roberts, he "gave a likable, restrained performance." Probably doesn't want to strain the old ticker.
